For internal partition walls solid wall lintels, whether 75mm, 100 or 150mm, box lintels are a good choice, designed to take nominal loads in a lightweight domestic setting, to concrete floors and attic trusses in a heavier load setting.

Box lintels are slotted to take a plaster finish. Be sure to order an insulation-filled box section if the lintel is to be built into the leaf of an external wall and is part of the thermal envelope.

External solid wall box lintels have a flat lip to support the facing masonry and will have insulation within the box too.

T lintels are shaped like an upside-down letter T and are designed to take two leaves of a fair-faced brick or block wall while remaining almost invisible.

Steel is often cheaper than concrete and has a better load bearing capability too. When you need a lintel to be discreet, choose a T-lintel, or for a lintel that will take plaster well, a steel box section will do the job.

Catnic were the first to bring steel lintels to the UK construction market back in the 1960s and the company has built on its time-served experience ever since. Today Wade stocks Catnic box and T lintels for almost every imaginable specification.

Their solid wall lintels come in different grades to fit larger or smaller spans and all are galvanised and powder-coated.

Stressline Box Steel Lintels

Stressline is another British company that started in the 1960s, producing a range of concrete lintels. Their story is one of innovation as Stressline is credited with making the first thermally broken steel lintel in 1991.

Their T-lintels are almost I-beams in that their shape is similar, as in the bottom (top) of the T is folded back on itself. This added piece of engineering design means that this lintel is capable of spanning nearly five metres.
