Wade's post mix material comes in easy-to-carry, weatherproof 20kg bags and can be used with timber, concrete and metal fence posts. Perfect for fencing, or for signposts, use one and a half bags per post for excellent results.

Reader Postfast® Postmix Concrete is easy to use right out of the bag, simply just add water. The mix is guaranteed for consistency and strength, no pre-mixing, or other preparation is required.

When installing a fence post:

  1. Dig the hole for the fence post keeping in mind the landscaper’s rule of three. If a post is 75mm square (3 inches) then the hole should be at least 225mm (9 inches) wide.
  2. For garden fences, depth is often more important, and you should aim for at least half a metre. If you are using timber posts, compacted gravel in the bottom of the hole will improve drainage and keep moisture away from the end of the post.
  3. Use two bags for corner and end posts as they will take the most lateral pressure.
  4. Set the post in the hole and pour water into it until it is about half full. This might not be possible in free-draining or dry soil. In this case, pour in the dry post-mix first.
  5. In either case, once the bag is emptied, if there is any dry mixture left in the hole, pour in more water. Stir it with a stick, or batten to release any air and to ensure the concrete is properly mixed through.
  6. Adjust and brace the post with a spirit level into its final, plumb, vertical position. The mix will begin to stiffen up after a couple of minutes, allowing for some minor adjustments if required.
