Road Plate Usage

Road plates can also be used on larger excavations up to 2.2 metres such as rectangular or transverse trenches that are properly TRL tested and supported. Any works requiring road plates will fall under the remit of a temporary works coordinator.

UK law states that any use of road plates should be ‘designed, installed and maintained to withstand any foreseeable loads which may be imposed’. At Wade, our plain and anti-skid road plates are fully compliant with British Standards and UK legal requirements.

They are available to either hire or buy, whether your project is short or long-term. Our team can advise you as to the most economical choice for your project. We also offer a flexible buy-back facility, so when your job is done, we can come and collect.

  • Each steel road plate weighs approximately 350kg and comes with four lifting eyes, one at each corner.

  • It is recommended that you use proprietary lifting equipment, such as a chainset, and lifting clamps to move road plates into position.

  • Always ensure that the trench walls are sufficiently supported in order that the road plate remains secure while in use.

  • Anti-skid metal road plates are ideal for use on public highways, or other accessible areas, to minimise potential hazards.

  • Road plates can be delivered cut to size for bespoke project requirements.

Road plates on a public highway will require fixing down to the road surface, either letting into the existing road surface or edged with a bitumastic product to provide a ramp. The Department of Transport advisory leaflet explains best practise in greater detail.

Steel road plates can be trafficked at speeds up to 30mph if properly secured. If a trench needs to remain open, but protected, in a public highway, make sure that regular inspections are made at the beginning and end of the day, and ensure that a record is kept.

Talk to our professional team at Wade today to find out how soon we can deliver your steel road plates to site.

Road Plate Weight and Handling

Please note: Steel road plates are incredibly heavy and cannot be lifted manually. Specialist machinery, such as cranes or forklifts, is required for safe transportation and placement.

We offer crane-off load delivery directly to your site for added convenience. If this service is required, please ensure it is specified at the time of your order.

Long-Term Value

Designed for durability and reusability, these road plates offer a cost-effective solution with minimal maintenance, making them an excellent long-term investment for any project.

If you only have a short-term need then Road Plate Hire might be worth considering. Give our rental team a call 0345 873 2828 if that is something of interest.

Compliance

Both the Standard Steel Road Plates and Anti-Skid Steel Road Plates are engineered to meet industry safety standards, providing reliable performance and ensuring peace of mind on every project.
